Flutist Eva Ryan’s passion for new music has led her to premier music of a wide range of styles in all corners of the country. Such works include John D’Earth’s Sunlit Walker and the Woman Enthrall, premiered at the National Flute Association convention in San Diego, requiring jazz improvisation and extended techniques. J. D’Earth wrote the piece with Eva in mind while she was studying jazz improvisation with him. Her extensive study of contemporary music led Miss Ryan to premier a piece for flute and computer composed by Juraj Kojs at the Gravity Lounge in Charlottesville, Virginia. Performing alongside flutist Eugenia Zuckerman at Pick-Staiger Concert Hall just outside Chicago, Eva had the honor to premier Music for the Coethen Castle Standing Clock edited and arranged by Anthony Newman.
As a chamber musician, Eva has performed in various outreach and benefit recitals. As a member of Troupeau D’oiseaux, a wind dectet, she performed in an outreach concert at the Chiaravalle Montessori School, as well as a benefit recital for Music Marathon, which raised money for The People’s Music School in Chicago. Miss Ryan also organizes small flute ensembles, including her duo Virginia Flutes, which performs holiday concerts at local retirement homes, and also performs at weddings and receptions.
Eva is constantly inspired through her work with Victor Yampolsky and Mallory Thompson while performing in the Northwestern University Symphony Orchestra and Symphonic Wind Ensemble. Last summer she continued her studies playing in the Symphony Orchestra Academy of the Pacific. Eva has also performed in the All-Virginia Orchestra, the All-Virginia Band, the South-Central Virginia Senior Regional Orchestra, the Youth Orchestra of Charlottesville and Albemarle, and the Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra.
Throughout her music career, Eva Ryan has received many honors and accolades including the John Philip Sousa Award, and the Susan B. Hoose Award. She made her solo debut in 2006 when she performed the Martin Ballade with the Youth Orchestra of Charlottesville and Albemarle, as a result of winning the Martha Dugan Concerto Competition. Eva also won two competitions hosted by the Wednesday Morning Music Club including High School Soloist and Camp Scholarship Recipient.
Eva Ryan has been influenced by a number of distinguished flutists through masterclasses and private study. She has performed in the Julius Baker masterclass as well as the masterclasses of Marina Piccinini, Jim Walker, Robert Dick, Elizabeth Rowe, Peter Loyd, Gary Schocker, and Tadeu Coelho. Her current teachers are both Walfrid Kujala and Richard Graef, and her past teachers include Alan Cox and Angela Kelly.
Miss Eva Ryan hails from Charlottesville, Virginia, where she often returns to perform at her church, St. Paul’s, and to continue her internship at the Blue Ridge Chamber Music Camp hosted by her former teacher Angela Kelly. Charlottesville has offered Eva invaluable teaching and performing experience throughout her life. Among these opportunities include those offered by her alma mater, Charlottesville High School, where she performed in the band and played violin in the orchestra. She currently studies at Northwestern University where she is pursuing a Bachelor of Music, and is an active member of her sorority.
